Pag

Hello!

I thought it would be a good idea to give a little more info on Pag since most who visit my blog are not from Croatia.

The photos are not mine but of coarse I linked to the source where you can find out even more info on the photo and on Pag. :)

I remember my cousin's telling me that when they went to go and see the plot of land my uncle bought on Pag their first impression was 'Dad!! You bought land on the moon!!'.
As you can see in the photo below Pag looks pretty bare.....but trust me there is an oasis hiding there!

Pag has many beautiful beaches and the water is so beautiful!

Pag is know for a few things and one of them (my favourite) is Pag cheese (Paški sir) or also called Pag Island cheese. My favourite cheese in the world! It is a hard sheep milkcheese and it's regarded as the most famous of all artisan cheeses made in Croatia. If you visit Croatia you MUST try this cheese!

Lace is another of Pag's treasures. Lace-makers did their work without any drawings using the works of their mother and grandmothers as examples.
In 2009 Pag lace was inscribed in the Unesco's Representative List of the Intagible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Tomorrow I'll share more pics of our vacation.

medvedgrad

My family took a little afternoon trip to Medvedgrad and I thought it would be nice to share here on my blog and instead of me trying to explain Medvedgrad I am quoting Wikipedia! :)

Medvedgrad (pronounced [mědʋedɡraːd]Croatian for bear-town or city of bears; is a medieval fortified town located on the south slopes of Medvednica mountain, approximately halfway from the Croatian capital Zagreb to the mountain top Sljeme. For defensive purposes it was built on a hill, Mali Plazur, that is a spur of the main ridge of the mountain that overlooks the city. On a clear day the castle can be seen from far away, especially the high main tower. Below the main tower of the castle is Oltar Domovine (Altar of the homeland) which is dedicated to Croatian soldiers killed in the Croatian War of Independence.

Here are a couple of views of the Alter of the Homeland which is dedicated to the soldiers. I pray for this country. It's a difficult place to live right now, the recession just keeps going, so many people are leaving because there is no work and if you find work the pay is miserable. I cannot tell you how many times I am asked 'why are you still here? why don't you go back to Canada?'.  This country has so much potential it's mind blowing but it needs a government that isn't corrupt as it has been up til now..... anyways....

A little history curtesy of Wikipedia.

The fortress was constructed after the Mongol invasion of 1242 when the city of Zagreb was destroyed and burned to the ground.
It was built by Philippe (de genere Türje), bishop of Zagreb, between 1249 and 1254; later it was owned by bans of Slavonia. After an earthquake in 1590, the fortress was heavily damaged and abandoned. It remained in ruins until recently when it was partly restored and now offers a panoramic view of the city from an altitude of over 500 meters (1,600 ft).
Notable Croatian and Hungarian poet and ban of Slavonia Janus Pannonius (Ivan Česmički) died in the Medvedgrad castle on March 27, 1472.

Once you climb to the top of the tower you get a gorgeous view of Zagreb.

This is the chapel of St. Filip and Jacov..... which my son Jakov was feeling pretty proud about! ;)

To the right of the photo above is a restaurant (temperarily closed...I noticed construction being done here and there...water damage etc). We took my mom here when Mia was born...the food was awesome!

I bought Mia little metal birdie earrings at the gift shop. :)

Marko and I have been on a Lord of the Rings and Hobit movies kick and we both agreed it felt like the Dwarfs could pop out at any minute! I just love visiting historical places!

Until next time City of Bears!

Life's a Beach!

Hello! Hope you all had a lovely weekend!

Here we go...continuing with my Croatia month! :)
The beach...ahhhhh the beach! :) When we go to Nin and Vrsi Mulo (where we stay with my aunt....Vrsi is about a 10 minute drive from Nin...my grandmother is from Vrsi) we like to go to the local beaches and not the touristy ones...and I suggest if visiting Croatia find out where the local beaches are and check them out.

This beach here where you can see my feet!! LOL is the beach where my mom as a child went to...I LOVE it...it's a sandy beach but in the water it's a mix of rock and sand.

Nin is also known for it's medicinal mud (peloid). It's located near the sandy Queen's beach and has been tested by thousands of people and is organized by one of Zadar's Health Institutions. It  treat various health issues such as rheumatic diseases, spinal deformalities, female infertility, skin disorders.....
My family had a go!! :) My husband couldn't get over how SMOOTH his skin was...he kept telling me to feel him up! LOL

I found this photo here! LOL my family wasn't as generous with the mud as this one! :)

This beach (below) is in Vrsi Mula (where my aunt is...she's three house up from this beautiful beach!!)...this is a pebble stone beach. (my two boys - Jakov the little shrimp standing in the water and Marko sitting next to him).

Mia jumped off this little pier about a million times! :)

We found this little treasure near the beach in Vrsi...Church of St. Jacob from the 11th century...my youngest was very excited because his name is Jakov (Jacob in English).

And just down from this beautiful church is a beach called the Coast of St. Jacob....Jakov thinks he owns the joint! :)

Hope you enjoyed this post...of coarse there's more to come! :) And there'll be a pop quiz at the end...just kidding...maybe a giveaway! :)
