Edit: I forgot to add Solana Nin's website!! www.solananin.hr
Hello!
This post is special...it's a TBT (throw back Thursday), history lesson and giveaway all in one! :)
My parents moved to Canada when I was 9 month old (I was born in Germany), both parents being Croatian they always had a dream to go back 'home'. My father would go on and on about the 'old country', his home....the most beautiful place on the planet! Now I know it may not be the most special place in the world for everyone but for me it is. I never understood the importance of my roots, where I come from, the history...my father would ramble and ramble on and on about it.....NOW I understand...having my own children I understand the importance of knowing where you came from.
This photo is of my mom and Dida (grandpa). My mom is from Nin, Croatia. I can't explain the feeling I have when I go there...I feel joy....like I grew up there (I grew up in Canada and moved here when I was 19). I feel the history of my family in Nin.
This photo is of my mom, me and my aunt (the blonde who can cook like no ones business). My mom said goodbye to Nin and her family in this photo and with only a suitcase in one hand me in the other my parents left for Canada.
Some of you know that I just got back from vacation and one of the places I visited was Nin of coarse and Nin's Solana. Solana you ask???
'Solana Nin is one of the rare saltworks to produce salt in the traditional, natural and ecological manner; by using the energy of the sun and the wind, the sea evaporates in vast evaporating pans. Clean environment, specific climate conditions with many hours of sun and a favourable wind, as well as an excellent geographic postition ensure that the Solana Nin salt is top quality on a global scale.'
There is a tour that you can go on where a guide takes you through the process of gathering the salt...we didn't go on it (we were there too early in the day) but our friends did and they really enjoyed it.
Here's a photo of the cute museum/gift shop.
I did not want to leave!!! Because of salt...I never thought I could get excited over SALT! LOL
Along the walls snippets of history and information like this one about the packaging workbench.
Packaging workbench
I just love the old photos they had on the walls.
This is one of the little trains used to transport the salt aournd.
And now for the goodies!! I wanted to buy everything...LOL...I mean it's salt people but I really did want it all! :)
Of coarse I bought a few goodies for myself..for my mom and mother-in-law and for one of you!! I'm giving away this sweet or should I say salty little set!!
What's so special about this Cvijet Soli???
'Food lovers around the world consider The Flower of Salt, French Fleur de Sel as 'the caviar of salt'.
This is the healthiest salt of highest quality rich in calcium and magnesium and having an increased concentration of natural iodine.
Solana Nin Flower of Salt truly is the best sea salt. It is obtained only in the ideal weather conditions, and harvested earlv in the morning and late at night when there is no wind. It appears at the sea surface as a thin layer of salt flakes, like flower petals, which are collected manually with micron sieves.'
So this is it...my little salty giveaway....and a cute little wooden spoon! Leave me a comment and I'll randomly choose one winner....this giveaway is open internationally!!
Good luck!
xo

this is so interesting Jane. I live in New Zealand, a long way from Croatia. We have been planning a trip to Croatia ~ had hope it would be this year..... but not to be. I'll have to see if we can add this into our trip. Not entirely sure what parts we are planning to go to yet. Your country really intrigues me

What a wonderful story! You brought it to life with your photos. And I learned something about salt which prior to this I never thought about how it's made or where it comes from or even that there are different ways to get it. Thanks so much!
